Oops...

Forgot to say that on that Saturday that I did the funeral and drove up to see the lady who was passing away i missed my eldest son's 5 year old birthday. My mother told the wife, "Welcome to the ministry. His father missed some of his." I think that was a bit unkind, but I hate that it happened. It upset me, who wants to be all things to all people. That is impossible, but I do try.

And why was your mother's comment unkind? Maybe she was trying to reach out to your wife and show her a bit of compassion. There can exist a bond between women who have experienced certain types of situations, and your mom knows first-hand the strains of being a minister's wife. Maybe she was just trying to assure your wife that it wasn't that you weren't wanting to be there but that these types of things are, unfortunately, a part of the job.

Because it was. These past years she tends to speak without thinking. Susanne knows how badly I wanted to be there. Susanne wasn't upset, I think Mother just is a bit annoyed that a cycle is set up and another set of boys is not getting the attention, in her opinion, that she thinks they need. I am, by the way, doing a while lot better with my children than my father did with his. I am bent on doing so. They deserve it.
